Hunger Action Month, founded by Feeding America and recognized by organizations across the country every September, is a month-long campaign to raise awareness about food insecurity in America and ways to take action. Will you join the fight against hunger?
Food insecurity is defined as the disruption of food intake or eating patterns because of lack of money and other resources.¹ From your immediate neighbors to surrounding counties and country-wide, food insecurity affects people from all walks of life.
Over 181,000 Palm Beach County residents are suffering from food insecurity. Of those, nearly 53,000 are children. ²
Nearly 1.1 million South Florida residents are are suffering from food insecurity. Of those, nearly 330,000 are children. ³
3.1 million Floridians lack proper food access. Of those, over 900,000 are children. ⁴
Due to the ongoing pandemic, more than 42 million people may experience food insecurity nationwide. ⁵

In 2021, BHH distributed more than 70,000 pantry bags from five Palm Beach County locations and served nearly 80,000 hot meals. In addition, BHH sends weekend meals home with food-insecure schoolchildren through the BHH Backpacks program to 12 local schools. An estimated 3,000 Thanksgiving meals will be distributed through the 18th annual Thanksgiving Box Brigade program. Local families will be provided with a turkey and the ingredients needed to prepare a hearty holiday meal.
