Mourning the Loss of a Community Pillar

January 14, 2022

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to a pillar of our community: Lois Martin. She passed away on Sunday, Jan. 9, at the age of 93. We extend our deepest sympathies to Lois's family and friends for their profound loss.

Over the course of ten years at BHH, she volunteered more than 3,200 hours. Back in 2016, she was awarded the BHH Lifetime Achievement award for her invaluable service. And just a few months ago, we had the pleasure of celebrating her 93rd birthday at BHH alongside her family and friends.

Lois and her family have been active members of the Boca Raton community. She was born in Boca Raton's historic district of Pearl City in 1928. Her family is originally from Georgia, but they relocated to Boca Raton several years before she was born and have a history of more than 100 years in this area.

In addition to her career as an educator, she was also a very passionate civic activist. Among her many accomplishments, she acted as secretary for the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, served as vice chairman for the Housing Authority, sat on the Boca Raton's Historic Preservation Board, and participated in numerous nonprofit organizations, including Habitat for Humanity and Boca Helping Hands.

Her memory and legacy will continue to impact the underserved communities of Boca Raton through the Lois Martin Community Center, part of Dixie Manor Public Housing, offering a variety of programming for children and teens.
