Celebrating Longtime Volunteer Lois Martin's 93rd Birthday

September 23, 2021

Over the course of ten years at Boca Helping Hands, Lois Martin has served more than 3,200 hours.

Back in 2016, she was awarded the BHH Lifetime Achievement award for her invaluable service. You'd typically find her in the food center on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays making sandwiches, rolling utensils, and checking bags at the door. Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming her back once more to celebrate alongside her and her family.

Lois has always been an active member of the Boca Raton community. She was born in Boca Raton's historic district of Pearl City in 1928. Her family is originally from Georgia, but they relocated to Boca Raton several years before she was born and have a history of more than 100 years in this area.

In addition to her career as an educator, she was also a very passionate civic activist. Among her many accomplishments, she acted as secretary for the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, served as vice chairman for the Housing Authority, sat on the Boca Raton's Historic Preservation Board, and participated in numerous nonprofit organizations, including Habitat for Humanity and Boca Helping Hands.

Her legacy continues to impact the underserved communities of Boca Raton through the Lois Martin Community Center, part of Dixie Manor Public Housing, offering a variety of programming for children and teens.
