"Over the past seven days, yellow white snappers — some of the best eating fish in the world — tuna, and grouper, approximately 100 pounds of filet fish," Harrison Konsker, the president and co-founder of Fillet for Friends, said.
The nonprofit organization had been providing meals to thousands of families to local food banks, including Boca Helping Hands.
"We receive a lot of food, proteins and whatnot from Publix, Winn-Dixie, Target, Walmart. We don’t get a lot of seafood as well as fresh fish," said Bill Harper, the director of food and warehouse operations at Boca Helping Hands.
Fillet for Friends began in 2014.
"We were in eighth grade and it came just because of a simple problem. We were collecting too much fish than our friends and families could eat," Konsker said.
This soon prompted Konsker and his friends to establish what is now known as Fillet for Friends. The nonprofit partners with local fishermen, as they receive any extra supply of saltwater fish.
Over the last seven years, Fillet for Friends donated more than 4,000 pounds of fish to Boca Helping Hands.
"Getting this fresh fish donated to us so that we can augment our shortage of food, it’s a really wonderful thing to be doing, especially in the holidays," Harper said.
Officials said they'll be handing out 150 meals to families in the community Friday.
"(We hope to) continue our mission and continue to spread our message from 2014 all the way into the future," Konsker said.
