It’s Giving Tuesday today, which means it’s a unified request from all non-profits for money to help those who need it most. This year, that number includes a lot more people than usual, including people you know.

The Addison

If we keep it local and food-related, here are some good choices. Please consider donating even a small amount – it all adds up to helping a lot.

Boca Helping Hands gives out 80,000 pantry bags per year and serves more than 70,000 hot meals each year, working six days a week. It sends weekend meals home with needy elementary school children. It awards scholarships to candidates for careers in the hospitality, healthcare, technology and transportation industries. In short, this organization does a lot every year, all year. Help them continue this here: https://bocahelpinghands.org

Buccan Provisions: Started by The Ember Group that owns West Palm Beach’s Grato, and Palm Beach’s Buccan and Imoto, this organization has served more than 200,000 since forming this summer. James Beard Award nominee chef/owner Clay Conley and his partners, Sam Slattery, Piper Quinn and culinary director Zach Bell have recruited other corporate partners for funding, equipment and supplies and provided about 10,000 meals weekly. It’s a true local commitment that’s paying off in big ways. Go here to donate: https://www.buccanprovisions.org/

Hospitality Helping Hands was started the night in early 2020 that local restaurateur Rodney Mayo, of the Subculture Group, had to let 650 employees go because of Covid restrictions. He vowed to help them by making sure they and their families received at least one hot meal a day.

His H3 organization is still going strong in our area, and still needs help. To donate, go here: https://www.hospitalityhelpinghands.org/who-we-are

Living Hungry, started by Maura Plante, has been feeding hungry children in Palm Beach, Collier, Okeechobee, St Lucie, Martin, Hendry and Broward counties for a while now. The program is still expanding, and it needs your help. A “Food Is Medicine” program launched in 2018 that was aimed at helping diabetic clients around the Jupiter area. The program’s result was seeing healthy eating habits, lower blood sugar levels and energy spikes in those who benefited from the meals and lessons.

You can adopt a school, or just help the many other programs in this organization. Go here to donate: https://livinghungry.org/

Feeding South Florida is the largest food bank serving Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. Last year, it distributed more than 99.3 million meals. We’re sure this year will break that record, and that’s where you can help.

This organization serves younger children, older adults, the working poor, single parents, veterans and former neighbors. In other words, everyone around us every day. To donate, go here: https://feedingsouthflorida.org
