“This year, we’re going to be doing it in five locations, which is one more location than we have done in the past. We have registered close to 3,000 families, so it’s a record number for us as well," Gregory Hazle said.

The nonprofit, which provides food to people across Palm Beach County, has an even greater need for donations of food this Thanksgiving than ever before.

“(The supply chain is) affecting the supply of donated food to us, so we are not seeing sticker shock that you’re seeing, but the same phenomenon is affecting the supply of food to us, so what we have had to do is purchase more food to supplement the reduction in supply that we're seeing from the food banks, from the food supermarkets and our normal sources of supply," Hazle said.

The average cost of preparing Thanksgiving dinner in 2020 was about $47, and it’s expected to cost up to 5% more this year, according to the Farm Bureau.

Boca Helping Hands said they couldn’t do it without support from the community.

“Most people are purchasing the items themselves and packing the boxes of themselves, so they are bearing the additional cost upfront," Hazle said.

Prices are higher on just about everything due to labor shortages, transportation costs and supply chain disruptions. Experts said this could be one of the most expensive Thanksgiving meals in history.
