Nutrition Basics, in partnership with Baptist Health South Florida, is a monthly class held via Zoom, with the next sessions happening on Feb. 26 and Mar. 12 at 12 noon. The program will be presented by Chay Shavrick, RN, the Women’s Health Navigator at Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. The content for the Nutrition Basics class changes each month and includes topics like how to read nutrition facts labels, portion distortion, getting active, navigating the grocery store, and nutrients, vitamins and minerals. The Nutrition Basics program is also incorporated into Phase One of the Boca Helping Hands Job Training Program, which prepares students to be successful in the workplace and in their day-to-day lives. In addition to Nutrition Basics, students learn about financial literacy, time management, conflict resolution and workplace etiquette and other tips to set them up for success.
Clients, students, and anyone looking to get in shape are also encouraged to take their health and wellness to the next step by participating in free community health classes hosted by Baptist Health South Florida via Zoom. These virtual exercise, meditation, and educational seminars can found at events.baptisthealth.net.
In partnership with Genesis Community Health, Boca Helping Hands also provides healthcare vouchers to assist uninsured Palm Beach County residents with dental, medical, and behavioral care. BHH distributed 522 vouchers in 2020 and continues to offer this service for those needing help to afford healthcare.
Boca Helping Hands has volunteers available to talk about healthcare vouchers at its main facility on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9am-12:30 pm (located at 1500 NW 1st Court, Boca Raton, FL 33432) or at its West Boca Pantry Bag Distribution location every other Saturday from 9am-10:30 am at Boca Glades Baptist Church (10101 Judge Winikoff Road, Boca Raton, FL 33428).
