At 88 years young, Bill Q. defies retirement stereotypes by dedicating his days to transforming lives through volunteerism at Boca Helping Hands.

At 88 years old, Bill Q. is an active and dedicated volunteer who has spent the past three and a half years helping others here at Boca Helping Hands. Living close by, Bill began his journey when he organized a food drive at his condo building two years ago. Recognizing a need for cereal, canned foods, and pasta, he initiated another drive by sending out letters and speaking with building managers. Thanks to his efforts, his latest food drive at his building is now in progress.

A clinical therapist and social worker, Bill’s commitment to helping others runs deep. After working at the post office for 29 years, he earned his Master of Social Work (MSW) from Florida Atlantic University in 2007 and worked for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), driven by a desire to assist those in need.

Volunteering has been a source of solace for Bill after the recent loss of his wife. “This is a support group for me here,” he said. According to his education, staying active helps combat loneliness, especially among men his age. “Men sometimes get lonely and keep to themselves. This is a great way to get back out there,” he said. Bill believes in the cognitive, physical, and social benefits of volunteering, noting, “we have to keep moving.”

For Bill, giving back is deeply personal. He recalls receiving food donations as a child and now sees volunteering as his opportunity to pay it forward. “Many of us have more than what we need in life,” he said. “Some of us have more, some of us have less. People should pitch in a little bit, help out if you can.”

When asked about his favorite part of volunteering, Bill says, “Trying to help less fortunate people. When I help people, I am receiving back.” His experiences have also opened his eyes to the broader need for help. “If we have places like this here in Boca Raton, what must it be like in other places? It tells us there is a need for help.”

Bill’s story is a testament to the power of volunteering. His dedication shows that donating food and time can make a significant difference. With the rising cost of food, many people are having to make tough decisions, eliminating costs from elsewhere in their budget. By supporting organizations like this, volunteers like Bill help alleviate these tough choices for many families.

Bill’s unwavering belief in the goodness of people and the importance of helping others is an inspiration. If you’re looking for a way to give back, consider following in Bill’s footsteps. Your time and effort can make a world of difference in someone’s life.
