Volunteer Spotlight: Patti S.

July 25, 2022

Patti Sorrin started volunteering at our main facility in East Boca Raton in January of 2018, assisting with checking in Pantry Bag Program clients. Since the pandemic, her role has switched from checking in clients to helping reconcile the paperwork from the drive-thru distribution with BHH's online system.

Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Sorrin and her husband moved to South Florida in 1985 for a work opportunity and to be closer to family. Since then, both her children have been born here and they now consider South Florida to be home.

After 35 years in the corporate world, managing a global team of business analysts and quality assurance analysts for a financial services firm, she took an early retirement in December of 2017.

Having heard positive things about BHH from a close friend who volunteers in the kitchen, she knew that when she had more time on her hands, she wanted to be a volunteer as well.

Since starting with BHH, she has donated nearly 1,200 hours of her time. You can still find her at the Pantry Desk and helping out in the Food Center twice a week.

Her inspiration to volunteer stems from believing in BHH's mission and aiming to meet a need in the community. She feels that volunteering is one of the best uses of her time and that "it's better to give than to receive."

Sorrin also values and admires her fellow volunteers, who are deeply committed to making a positive impact on others without complaint.

In addition to her service with BHH, she volunteered at several elementary schools prior to the pandemic and hopes to return this fall. She's also exploring becoming a Family Nurture Partner with Habitat for Humanity.
