Serving with Heart: How D'Andrea Builds Community at BHH

When D’Andrea D. began volunteering at Boca Helping Hands in early October, 2021, she knew she wanted to make a difference—but she didn’t expect how much the experience would change her. From day one, she brought warmth, compassion, and a deep commitment to serving others.

From the very first day, D’Andrea became a fixture of warmth and compassion. Her dedication stems from a genuine love for the clients—whom she fondly calls “guests”—and a belief that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity. “A lot of times, people are embarrassed to ask for help,” D’Andrea says. “I love seeing them push past that and being there to welcome them.”

Over the years, D’Andrea has built meaningful relationships with many returning guests. One guest even reminded her that he was the first in line on the pantry’s opening day. D’Andrea’s ability to recognize familiar faces, welcome new ones, and make each person feel valued has made her an essential part of the community. “When someone comes in for the first time, I say, ‘Let me be the first to welcome you.’ They always leave with a smile, and I love that.”

A retired healthcare and childcare worker, D’Andrea’s calling to help others blossomed later in life. Though she initially considered finding other volunteer opportunities, she finds such fulfillment at Boca Helping Hands that she’s stayed for three years—and counting.

Even through challenging times, D’Andrea’s unwavering presence and warm spirit have made a lasting impact. Guests often ask about her when she’s away, a testament to the difference she makes every day. “I love the guests, and they love me,” D’Andrea says with pride.

At Boca Helping Hands, D’Andrea D proves that kindness, consistency, and compassion can change lives—one warm welcome at a time.
